What counts as a federal holiday?

Federal holidays are the 11 days designated by 5 U.S.C. Β§ 6103. Most non-essential federal offices, post offices, and the Federal Reserve close on these days. Banks and stock markets follow a similar but not identical schedule.

"Observed" days

If a federal holiday falls on a Saturday, the preceding Friday is the observed (paid) day off. If it falls on a Sunday, the following Monday is the observed day. Independence Day on a Sunday, for example, means Monday July 5 is observed.
