Holidays by State

US holidays — state by state.

Every state observes the 11 federal holidays, but most also add state-specific ones — Patriots' Day in Massachusetts, Pioneer Day in Utah, Mardi Gras in Louisiana, and more.

Why state holidays matter

State holidays affect state offices, schools, banks, and many private employers. They differ widely — California adds Cesar Chavez Day on March 31, Texas adds Texas Independence Day on March 2, and Hawaii observes King Kamehameha I Day on June 11. Knowing your state's calendar helps with payroll, scheduling, and travel planning.

What's not on these pages

We've intentionally left out a handful of state observances whose historical meaning remains controversial (most have been quietly removed by state legislatures over the past decade). The focus here is on widely-observed civic and cultural holidays.
