Uposatha — the lunar observance days
In Theravada Buddhism, four days per lunar month are uposatha observance days: new moon, full moon, and the two quarter moons. Devout lay Buddhists observe extra precepts (often the Eight Precepts) on these days; monastics use them for confessional ceremonies. In 2026 there are 48 uposatha days, falling roughly weekly.
The Buddhist Era (BE)
Most Theravada countries number years from the Buddha's parinirvana. In Thailand and Sri Lanka, the Buddhist Era runs 543 years ahead of the Common Era — so 2026 CE corresponds to BE 2569. Cambodia and Laos use a different reckoning (2026 CE = BE 2570).
Why Vesak dates differ by country
Vesak (Buddha Day) is the most important Buddhist holiday — commemorating the Buddha's birth, enlightenment, and death. Theravada countries observe it on the full moon of the Vaisakha month (May 1, 2026). Mahayana traditions observe Buddha's Birthday alone on a different date (Korea, Vietnam, China: May 24, 2026; Japan: April 8 fixed).
